[UNCTAD] Sometimes, Silence is Golden
Written by Breitbart Agency
The US stays relatively silent at discussions on the ongoing trade war with China, and other countries are seemingly taking advantage of this, but is it all just part of the plan?
“..the US is willing to cooperate with the suggestion to provide resources to these developing countries(Thailand, India etc.)” said the delegate of the USA at the UNCTAD.
The first day of the ongoing United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD) has just concluded, and the discussions on the ways to manage the fallout of the USA China Trade war have definitely been fruitful so far, in the words of the delegation of USA.
At the beginning of the day, the delegations of Thailand and India managed to spark off discussion by suggesting a few solutions like strengthening supply chains and diverting trade to developing countries to allow for lesser reliance on the USA and China for trade. Other countries such as Ireland and the USA have also been supportive of these solutions and this led to further discussion on details regarding region clusters of export, trading blocs etc.
Through the day, it can be noted that the delegation of the USA contributed noticeably little to the discussions, and only expressed its agreement to points being raised by delegates from other countries. This was seen as strange by some countries, and some countries seemed to “take advantage” of this situation to suggest solutions that would benefit their country’s individual goals. However, this is not the case. The USA has maintained a firm stance regarding trade and is only “sympathizing with many developing nations’ concerns.”
In a one-on-one interview with the delegate of the USA after suspension of debate, the delegate has expressed their high hopes of reaching a profitable resolution by the end of the conference. They have also stated that one of the reasons the US has not spoken up much during discussions, is because the discussions have just been going in a highly favourable direction for the US, and thus, there is not much reason to interfere when all is going well. The delegation of USA elaborated by stating that “it is in the United States interest to diversify its supply chains and move manufacturing out of China into either developing nations or its own”, explaining how trade diversion from China would allow the nation to source out to developing countries for cheaper labour and exports, thus aiding in the progress of trade for the US.
Furthermore, the icing on the cake would only be the fact that developing countries like Thailand and India have clearly expressed their profound agreement to cut prices for developed countries to invest in them. As such, when trade is diverted away from China, it will still benefit the USA and the developing countries. Now, that’s what you call a strategy.
Thus, it can be observed how the discussions have definitely been extremely beneficial for the US, as it is finally making efforts to gain some leverage over China through supporting developing countries by providing resources and training. Thus, by simply supporting the ideas of other countries, the USA is not only actively working with other countries to mitigate the global repercussions of the raging trade war but is also now one step closer to clinching victory against China. Truly, sometimes, silence is golden.
