[UNSC] Conference Continues over Kashmir Conflict

Written by Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha

Members of the UN Security Council (UNSC) have continued talks of a solution to the Kashmir Conflict between Pakistan and India.

Yesterday, the UNSC talked about possible solutions to the Kashmir Conflict including the strengthening of the UN Military Observer Group of India and Pakistan (UNMOGIP), creation of a Line of Actual Control and a fact finding mission of human rights abuse in both Pakistan and India as well as encouragement of bilateral talks between the two opposing states. All solutions were supported by many members including Russia and China.

In an interview with the Hindustan Times, The delegate of India is not particularly pleased with the progress of the UNSC meeting. He cited that the UNMOGIP is not supported and that “the enthusiasm for it within the council is not supported” He also stated that the fact finding mission for human rights issues is “unnecessary and a breach of sovereignty.”

The conference continues today where the various members continue their talks on finding a solution to the conflict. Significant progress has already been made in the council.

Sanctions have been proposed on terrorist groups in Kashmir such as the islamist terrorist groups Lashkar-e-Taiba among many other islamist terrorist groups. The delegate of Norway claims that the sanction proposed would cut funding of such terrorist groups meaning they would not be able to purchase weapons and recruit more fighters. The delegate of France also supported the creation of a sanction committee to find out which organization to sanction and investigate the source of the funding in order not to mistake peaceful separatists in the region with violent terrorists. China, a major ally of Pakistan, have even pledged to pressure the Pakistanis to drop support of terrorist groups and pressure them to conduct more counter terrorism operations in Kashmir.

Other than that, the UNSC have also proposed a potential deployment of UN Peacekeepers if there is an escalation of conflict between Pakistan and India in the Kashmir region.

The UNSC has continued to support bilateral talks between Pakistan and India and recognises that the Kashmir conflict is a bilateral issue. According to the delegate of France, the UNSC should not interfere, especially a military intervention in Kashmir.

However, the delegates of China have also supported peacekeeping missions to a new buffer zone between India and Pakistan in Kashmir though they have not been supported by other members of the UNSC. As the delegate of Estonia have pointed out, the peacekeepers should not be deployed so sparingly but rather then a genocide and a war has occured in Kashmir. The idea by Estonia.

Russia has also claimed that China has exploited the issue of the Kashmir Conflict for their own advantage due to them taking over Aksai Chin and wants China to back down from the Kashmir Conflict.

As the meeting in the UNSC continues and disagreement still remains in the council, it is interesting what the result of this year’s conference would be.
