The United Nations Security Councils (UNSC) conference today has begun and delegates from many parts of the world have arrived to discuss the Kashmir Conflict. This year’s conference is expected to end tomorrow on the 21st of August 2021.

The area of concern is Kashmir, a disputed territory between mainly India and Pakistan since their independence in 1947. India and Pakistan have gone to war over the disputed territory four times since both nation’s independence. As both nations are nuclear powers, resolving the Kashmir Conflict is important for peace and stability in the region. Other participants in the conflict is China who has control over Aksai Chin and an ally of Pakistan. Meanwhile, the United States is a close ally of both Pakistan and India.

The UN have also attempted to mediate the conflict between the two nations and have set up the United Nations Military Observer Group in India and Pakistan (UNMOGIP) which was created in 1948. However, the organization is not recognised by both India and Pakistan.

Although the UNSC is discussing the issue of Kashmir, Pakistan is not represented in today’s meeting.

The UNSC has a general consensus that the Kashmir Conflict is a bilateral issue between India, Pakistan and China and wished to prevent future violation of ceasefire in order to reduce further bloodshed in the region.

The UNSC also wants to introduce a Line of Actual Control between Pakistan and India which was used between China and India and reduced conflicts between the two states as well as encouraging dialogue and negotiations between the two nations.

China has expressed that the issue of Kashmir is not in fact a bilateral issue between the participating countries but a global issue that other nations have to face. China is also concerned about the economic effects of the solutions in an interview with the BSS.

Russia, a major voice in today’s conference, expressed that they would not interfere in the conflict. Russia has also advocated for a monthly report on the situation in Kashmir by the UNMOGIP to the UNSC and improving communication between India and Pakistan wanting the UNMOGIP to play a mediating role between India and Pakistan in order to prevent future conflict.

Meanwhile, India disagrees with Russia on more use of the UNMOGIP believing that the organisation is biased, not effective and is not confident of the UNMOGIP. India believed that any potential human rights violation can be discussed bilaterally rather than through the UN. The Indian delegate has even suggested that China would be using the UNMOGIP as a tool to further their gains in the region claiming that China has a plan to “take over the world”.

The delegate of Russia have a similar share of extreme solutions suggesting a sanction against Pakistan who have committed state-sponsored terrorism in many parts of the world including India.

As of now, the UNSC is continuing their conference in order to resolve the Kashmir Conflict.
